Tri-Delta to host dessert for cancer research

Put away your
South Beach Diet book, forget about Atkins, and go over your Weight Watcher’s
points, its that time of year when Delta Delta Delta wants you to stuff your
face with sweets.
Delta Delta
Delta is holding its annual Delta Desserts this Wednesday evening at the
Tri-Delta house. Tickets are $4, benefiting St. Jude’s Children’s Research
Hospital and Jennifer Shih, a Tri-Delta alum who had a heart transplant in
September.
Shih is the
daughter of Jason and Janet Shih, both members of the LSU faculty and staff. She
is a graduate of LSU and was a member of the Delta Omega chapter of Tri-Delta.
Shih was recently diagnosed with a rare disease called Giant Cell Myocarditis,
in which a heart transplant was needed. Shih is presently doing well, but due to
the high costs of medical treatment, the Shih family turned to Tri-Delta to help
out with the expenses.
Delta Desserts
is one of two fund raisers that Tri-Delta puts on through the school year. It is
a buffet to satisfy your sweet tooth with everything from cookies to a flowing
chocolate fountain.
Local bakeries
and restaurants donated some of the desserts, while sorority members provided
some baked goods of their own. “Something new we are excited about is the
chocolate fountain provided by Unique Cuisine—everybody is amazed by it”, said
Elizabeth McCollister, Tri-Delta Philanthropy chair.
Tri-Delta
members will personally deliver the charity money raised during this event
during their annual trip to Memphis.
“This year we
are trying to raise about $4,000 through ticket sales to LSU students, faculty,
and people in the Baton Rouge community”, said McCollister.
St. Jude
patients, Jennifer Shih, and Tri-Deltas are not the only people anticipating the
event.
“My friends in
other sororities are always asking me when Delta Desserts is going to be,” said
Tri-Delta sophomore, Kim Miller. “They enjoy it because we get to hang out while
eating tasty treats and helping out a good cause.”
“We’re excited
about Delta Desserts, Courtney Prince, the President of Delta Delta Delta, said.
“We usually have a great turnout—the house is packed with friends, family,
classmates, and teachers with plates full of cookies, cake, and brownies.”
The fundraiser
also includes its own entertainment package. A background of music by open-mic
night favorite and Tri-Delta member, Annie Claire LaBorde, will fill the air
along with the aroma of fresh baked goods.
“We encourage
everybody to stop by the Tri-Delta house on Wednesday evening, from 7 to 9 p.m.
to enjoy the sweets, all while helping out St. Jude’s and one of our Tri-Delta
sisters,” said McCollister.
