Dear Jennifer,

This time of year it is sometimes difficult to get motivated. The first month of 2005 has come and gone, Punxatawney Phil saw his shadow today, and many of us have already fallen behind on our new year's resolutions. Maybe you were just tackled by that credit card statement from the holidays, and now you're feeling a little sidelined. Or perhaps you're starting to notice the role that those holiday parties played on your figure, and now they are up for an Academy Award - Biggest Impact on Your Waistline. If you are experiencing any of these feelings--FORGET THEM (at least for the duration of this newsletter)!

This issue of the Pine Tree is tailor-made to make you forget the woes of last year (or last week), and focus on the promise of the year ahead. This month is about recognizing and celebrating success!

You may know that February is American Heart Month. We wanted to take this opportunity to share the inspiring success story of Tri Delta alumna Jennifer Shih. Read about how she redefined success through her ordeal with a rare heart disease and emerged successful!

Depending on your tastes, you may be eagerly anticipating one of two February events-the Super Bowl or the Academy Awards; both are representations of the most successful "players" in their respective fields. And would you believe, Tri Delta has connections to each. Fans of Eagles, Patriots, and Oscar himself, you are covered.

Challenge yourself to strive for success in life. I hope it finds you this month like it has found so many amazing Tri Deltas!

In the bonds,
Lauren Ford
Pine Tree Editor

FEBRUARY IS AMERICAN HEART MONTH

There is a light that shines beyond all things on earth, beyond the highest, the very highest heavens.
This is the light that shines in your heart.
-Chandogya Upanishad

When it comes to matters of the heart, Tri Delta Jennifer Shih, Louisiana State, might know more than any of us. After completing medical school and a 3-year residency at Emory University, Jennifer was following her dream to help infants and children with heart problems, studying pediatric cardiology at one of the top cardiology programs in the nation. In August 2004, finding herself persistently exhausted, Jennifer performed an echocardiogram on herself. With fluid building around her heart and blood pressure rapidly dropping, Jennifer took herself to the emergency room. A short while later, she was diagnosed with a rare disease called Giant Cell Myocarditis. Her condition rapidly deteriorated, and by September 1st, she was airlifted to the Cleveland Clinic, where doctors determined her heart was too damaged to pump on its own and said she would need a heart transplant to survive. On September 12th, a donor heart was found, and after waiting five hours to determine if the heart was a match and enduring a six-hour surgery,
Jennifer received her heart transplant.

Thus far, Jennifer is doing well with the support of her family, friends, Tri Delta sisters, and her own reserves of incredible strength and dignity as she learns to live with a new heart.
